Tile Installation in Houston, TX

Porcelain, ceramic and stone tile across Houston and the surrounding metro: floors, bathrooms, kitchens and wet walls. On reactive clay the assembly under the tile matters more than the tile, which is why an uncoupling membrane is standard rather than an upgrade.

✓Uncoupling membrane so seasonal slab movement stays out of the grout line
✓Slab ground and filled to the flatness tolerance large-format tile needs
✓Wet walls waterproofed behind the tile rather than relying on grout
✓Layout and transitions set out before the first tile is cut

Tile That Survives a Houston Slab

Cracked grout lines and lifted tile in Houston usually come from the substrate. Beaumont Formation clay moves the slab seasonally, and a tile assembly bonded rigidly to that slab transmits every bit of it. Decoupling the tile from the slab is what stops it.

Houston Tile Prep Checklist

✓Slab flatness measured against the tolerance the tile format needs
✓Uncoupling membrane set in unmodified thin-set before any tile goes down
✓Waterproofing carried up wet walls behind tile in showers and tub surrounds
✓Movement joints placed where the assembly needs them

Large-format tile is less forgiving than small, in both directions: it needs a flatter slab and it shows lippage more. On a kitchen or open-plan floor that usually means grinding before setting.

Local Compliance & Performance

  • Slab Read Before Specification: Almost every home here is slab-on-grade over reactive clay. Flatness and moisture are measured and written down before an assembly is chosen, because a floor only hides what the slab lets it.
  • Built for Clay Movement: Beaumont Formation clay swells through the wet season and shrinks in drought, and that movement travels up through the slab as seam cracks, nail pops and separated trim joints. Scopes are priced with the repair in them, because coating over movement is why the same cracks come back.
  • Permit Coordination: Replacing a floor is finish work, not structural work, and the City of Houston lists flooring among its permit-exempt interior finishes. Outside the city limits the county is the authority, and Harris County issues no residential building permit for a flooring replacement at all. Structural or flood-damage repair is a different question, and we confirm it first.
  • Flood History Priced In: Bayou, river and reservoir flooding through Harvey and the 2015-2019 events means a large share of Houston homes are on a second or third floor replacement. A street that has taken water usually needs substrate repair a dry one does not.

What is included in a tile installation?

Does my Houston slab need leveling before large-format tile?

Nearly always. Flatness tolerance tightens as tile size grows, and a slab as poured rarely meets it for large format. Grinding high spots and filling low ones is invisible work that nonetheless decides whether the floor reads flat.

Why does grout crack in Houston homes?

Because the slab moves with the clay underneath it and the tile is bonded to the slab. An uncoupling membrane lets the slab move without taking the tile and grout with it. Without one, seasonal movement finds the grout line first.

Is tile or LVP better here?

Neither in the abstract. Water risk points to rigid core plank; longevity and heat tolerance point to tile over a membrane. Most Houston homes end up with both, in different rooms, and we would rather walk the rooms with you than sell one answer.

How are showers waterproofed?

With a bonded waterproofing membrane behind the tile, carried up the wet wall and sealed at the corners and penetrations. Grout and tile are not a waterproof layer.

How long does a tile floor take?

Most whole-floor tile projects run four to eight working days depending on format, layout and how much demo is involved. Slab prep and cure time are the parts people underestimate; the setting itself goes quickly.
