Flooring Services in Houston, TX
Tile, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank and hardwood refinishing across Houston and the surrounding metro. Nearly every home here is slab-on-grade over reactive clay, and a large share are on a second or third floor replacement after Harvey and the 2015–2019 events. The slab decides the assembly, so it gets read before any material is chosen.

Flooring Installation on Houston Slabs
Everyone quotes flooring by the square foot, which makes Houston quotes look comparable when they are not. What separates them is what each one assumes about the slab: how far out of flat it sits, how much moisture it is still giving off, and whether the street has taken water before. On reactive clay those assumptions decide the price.
Houston Slab Prep Checklist
Laying over a slab that has not finished drying is how a floor gets replaced twice. We would rather delay a start by a week than put a new floor onto a reading we do not like.
Local Compliance & Performance
- Slab Read Before Specification: Almost every home here is slab-on-grade over reactive clay. Flatness and moisture are measured and written down before an assembly is chosen, because a floor only hides what the slab lets it.
- Flood History Priced In: Bayou, river and reservoir flooding through Harvey and the 2015-2019 events means a large share of Houston homes are on a second or third floor replacement. A street that has taken water usually needs substrate repair a dry one does not.
- Permit Coordination: Replacing a floor is finish work, not structural work, and the City of Houston lists flooring among its permit-exempt interior finishes. Outside the city limits the county is the authority, and Harris County issues no residential building permit for a flooring replacement at all. Structural or flood-damage repair is a different question, and we confirm it first.
- Association and Deed Restrictions: Houston has no zoning, so land use runs on recorded deed restrictions that vary street to street, and master-planned communities add their own architectural review. Color-board packets and association documentation are prepared and submitted before a start date goes on the calendar.
What is included in a flooring installation?
How much does new flooring cost in Houston?
Material and format move the number more than brand does: large-format tile is slower to lay than small, and more rooms mean more thresholds and more cutting. What is already down matters as much as what is going in: tearing out mortar-set tile or glued plank costs more than covering a sound slab. We measure, read the slab and quote from both.
Does a Houston slab need leveling before tile?
Usually, yes. A slab here is rarely flat enough for large-format tile as poured, and the tolerance for big tile is tighter than for plank. We check with a straightedge and grind or fill to suit the material rather than hoping the thin-set absorbs it.
What flooring is best for a home that has flooded?
Rigid core luxury vinyl plank is the sensible default where water is a real possibility, and tile over an uncoupling membrane is the other durable answer. The more important step is proving the slab is dry with a documented reading before anything new goes down.
Do I need a moisture barrier over a slab?
That is decided by the reading, not by habit. A high reading changes the underlayment, the adhesive and sometimes the material itself. We test first and specify afterwards.
Do I need a permit to replace flooring in Houston?
Inside the city, no. Flooring is listed among Houston's permit-exempt interior finishes. Outside the city limits the county is the authority, and Harris County issues no residential building permit for a flooring replacement at all. Structural or flood-damage repair is assessed separately.
